Granny Stitch Cardigan - The Midori Cardigan

 



Crocheting your own cardigan gives you the freedom to choose your colors, fit and style, making it the perfect addition to your wardrobe. This beautiful granny stitch cardigan is perfect for cool and breezy days. It is also is a great layering piece for fall and winter. I hope you enjoy and have fun crocheting!


Materials:

  • 6mm hook 5.5mm for certain edges of cardigan  
  • Yarn-4 medium yarn I used pound of love Lion brand color olive approx. 400g used
  • 1 small scissors
  • Stitch markers
  • Buttons-4
  • Measuring tape
  • Tapestry needle 

Stitch Pattern for Granny Stitch

The number of stitches to make this granny stitch pattern has to be divisible by 4

Measurements

The beauty of crocheting is the ability to tailor it to your exact size and preference. This cardigan is size small.  It is made to measure so you can use any yarn and hook size, to tailor your cardigan to your preference.  Here is brief measurement guide. 

Width of garment= with a measuring tape measure shoulder to shoulder

Length of garment=measure the top of shoulder to desire length.

Arm hole width measure around the largest part of arm.

Length of sleeve, make it to the length you desire.

 

Note: add 2-4 inches in ease for a more comfortable fit

  • slp knot- slip knot
  • yo-yarn over
  • dc- double crochet
  • blo-back loop only
  • flo-front loop only
  • sc-single crochet

  • hdc-half double crochet
  • slp st/ sl st= slip stitch 

Stitch Instructions:

Double Crochet:

Step 1: Yo insert hook into st.

Step 2: *Yo pull yarn through work only.

Step 3: yo pull through two loops.

Step 4: Yo and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Step 5:1dc is made. Yo, insert hook into next stitch, repeat from * In step 2.

Half double Crochet:

Step 1: Yo and insert the hook into the work.

Step2: *Yo and pull through the work only.

Step3: Yo again and pull through all three lopps on the hook.

Step4:1hdc made Yo, insert hook into next st, repeat from* in step 2.

Single Crochet:

Step 1: Insert hook into work * yo and pull the yarn through the work only.

Step2: Yo again and pull the yarn through both loops on the hook.

Step3:1sc made. Insert hook into next st, repeat from* in step 1.

Slip stitch: (used for joining, carrying the yarn to another part of the project for the next stage)

Insert the hook into the work, yo and pull the yarn through both the work and the loop on the hook.

Ending Instructions:

Tie off:

 Step 1: cut the yarn leave a few inches of yarn for weaving,

 Step 2: With hook pull the tail through the loop on your hook, Step 3: remove hook on tail to tighten

Weave ends:

Step 1: turn project on wrong side

Step 2: insert hook through sts

Step 3: grab yarn and weave it back through until tail is not seen. 

PATTERN

Back Panel: (Row #1-68 for ribbing)

Make a slipknot

Row #1

ch 7, in 2nd ch from hook sc to the end of row, ch1 turn work., 1 ½ in. in height

Row #2

Insert hook in blo, sc to the end of the row, ch1 turn work

Row # 3-68

Repeat Row #2, until you reach approx. length of 18 ½ in.

Foundation stitch to start Granny Stitch (68 sc)

Ch 1, sc across the ribbing, in each st until you reach the end of the row.

Row #1

ch5 *(skip 3 sts, put 3dc into the 4th s tch 2)

Repeat* put 1dc into the last st, ch3 turn your work

Row #2

Ch 3, 2dc in ch sp ch2, 3dc in next ch sp ch2, 2dc in last ch sp, 1dc on top of last st

Row # 3

ch 5, 3dc in each sp ch2, in last cluster put 1 dc in the top of ch3

Row # 4-32

Repeat Row #2 for even rows, repeat Row#3 for odd rows, Height of back panel is approx. 181/2 in., width is approx. 20 ½ in

Front Panel (Same pattern as back panel only smaller. Make 2)

Make a slipknot

(Ribbing Row #1- Row #28)

Row #1

ch 7, in 2nd ch from hook sc to the end of row, ch1 turn work., you should have 6 sts.

Row #2

Insert hook in blo, sc to the end of the row, ch1 turn work

Row # 3 -Row #28

Repeat Row #2 for even rows, repeat Row#3 for odd rows, approx. 10 ½ in in length

Foundation stitch to start Granny Stitch (28 sc)

Ch 1, sc across the ribbing, in each st until you reach the end of the row

Row #1

ch5 *(skip 3 sts, put 3dc into the 4th s tch 2)

Row #2

Repeat* put 1dc into the last st, ch3 turn your work

Row # 3

ch 5, 3dc in each sp ch2, in last cluster put 1 dc in the top of ch3

Row # 4-32

Repeat Row #2 for even rows, repeat Row#3 for odd rows, Height of each front panel is approx. 18 ½ in., approx. 10 ¾ in width


SEAMING

(Note: all seaming is done on the wrong side of garment)

Place front panels on back panels. Starting from the right to left with, place st markers on the dc clusters to hold panels in place.  This is where we will join panels in shoulder section, and on the sides up to the arm hole.

Note: The opening of the armhole will be the circumference of the sleeve, that will fit around your arm. The decrease rows in between will taper off the sleeve gradually. Stitch marker placement varies to size preference. My stitch marker placement for my seaming is in my YouTube Video, feel free to watch at any time for a clearer visual picture.

SEAMING INSTRUCTIONS

pull yarn through with hook at the edge of the two panels tie a knot, to join two panels together, yo bring up a loop, sc in the blo until you reach the end of your st that you marked, ch 1 fasten off

SLEEVES

The sleeves will be worked in rounds be sure to turn your work and the decrease rows to give the sleeves a tapered look.

Round #1

slp st to join ch3 2dc in same sp ch2, 3dc in next sp ch 2 cont. this pattern until to reach the end of the row slip st to join at the top of the ch3 from the beginning of the row ch3 turn work

Round #2, 8-13,15-20

Repeat Round #1

Decrease row pattern row #7, 14, 21, 28,

ch 3 turn work 3dc ch2 in next space in last sp yo insert hook in sp, pull up a loop, yo draw thru 2 loops 2 times yo go into next sp, yo pull thru 4 loops join w/ slp st at top of ch3 slp st in next sp ch 3 turn work, 2dc in same sp

Round #29-31 repeat Round #1

Round #32 decrease row

ch2 2dc in each sp until you reach the end of the row

Ribbing

Row#1   

ch 7 sc in each ch slp st in the next st, slp st again in the next st turn your work

Row#2

skip 2 sts, sc blo until you reach the end of row slip st in the next st, slp st again in next st ch1 turn your work

Row#3-40

Odd rows repeat Row#1 even rows repeat row#2 Turn on wrong side, seam together sc flo

Stich Pattern for front panel edging

Row#1

ch 2, 2 hdc in each sp and in each dc cluster to end of row

Row#2

ch 2 1dc in each st buttonhole opening are on the right side 1dc ch1

Finishing Instructions

Sew on buttons more visual details in video.

Fasten off when seaming edges.  Weave all ends at the end of project for a cleaner look and to secure the longevity of your garment.
